Sir,

Court House, Victoria, Hong Kong, 8th February 1868.

After on mentioning residence in this Colony, during the whole of which I have been in the employ of the Government, and for five years of it in the post which I still fill, namely, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, I feel myself necessitated to address you on the subject of an increase of Salary.

My present salary, £350 is totally insufficient to meet the numerous demands that, in a Colony like this, are made on a European's means, and utterly inadequate to recompense me for the time, labour, and care required for the faithful discharge of the duties of my office.

Referring to my appointment as Deputy Registrar, I aver that the duties of the Registrar's Office have not lessened, but on the contrary, have been and are now, more onerous than they have ever been since, as shown by the Annual Returns from them to the Judicial Department, and, I confidently assert, that the work in the said office is unmistakably, having increased in purity as well as quantity, to exercise great and continued discrimination and care, as they are called upon (without any extra remuneration) to do, in Offices, both in the Common Law and Equity.
